A special Minecraft game, which allows players to design their own hospital building, has been launched as part of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Stage 2 (CHW2) redevelopment project. Roberts Co, the principal builder of the new Paediatric Services Building, has helped develop the online world where users can explore and create their own hospital, including details like green spaces and personalised bedrooms. To coincide with the game launch, the CHW Stage 2 project team and Starlight Foundation recently hosted two interactive events, to give children the opportunity to create a building on Minecraft or from craft items. Among guests were nine-year-old patient Alexa and her mum Dylan, who helped design a hospital out of cardboard, glitter and paint. Alexa said she loves coming to the Starlight room. “The new building will have a big sign and an elevator, but it's going to be way bigger. Alexa's mum, Dylan, "Anything that distracts them from thinking about being sick is a big help." Roberts Co Project Manager Melissa Jones said interactive activities like Minecraft allow patients and their siblings to learn and engage with new building, before it opens to the public. "We really want to meaningfully connect with patients and young people in the community, who will ultimately be the users of the new hospital building under construction,” said Melissa. “The Minecraft game was created to entertain, educate and create a sense of curiosity about the new Paediatric Services Building.” The event included a broadcasted interview with a Site Engineer who spoke about the construction of the new facility, machinery used on site and the importance of safety measures. The Paediatric Services Building is scheduled to be completed in 2025 and will include cancer services, operating theatres, cardiac services, intensive care, pharmacy, and inpatient units. If you want to design your own hospital and go in the running to win a $100 Westfield gift voucher all you need to do is submit a screenshot or video of your Minecraft design to NSWH-HI-Kids@health.nsw.gov.au.
